GRATTAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)-A Newaygo County man is in the hospital after an accident involving a fire engine.

It happened around 12:12 a.m. Saturday on Lincoln Lake Avenue just north of Six Mile Road NE in Grattan Township.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department says Michael Vanheck of Grant was driving north on Lincoln Lake Avenue when he veered, hit a guard rail and then swerved over the center line, hitting the fire engine head on.

The impact of the crash threw 45 year old Vanheck from his vehicle and flipped the fire engine.

Vanheck was flown to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital with serious injuries. He was listed in critical condition Saturday night. The three firefighters inside the engine suffered minor injuries.
