Brandon Moore makes the switch from wide receiver to quarterback for his senior year.
MONTAGUE, Mich. (WZZM) - The Montague Wildcats will have a new starting quarterback when they open the season against Muskegon Orchard View later this month. But he's a player every opponent in the West Michigan Conference has seen before.
Senior Brandon Moore moves from wide receiver to quarterback to replace the graduated Travis Cockerill. Moore, a big-time playmaker who is being recruited by division one universities, says he's happy to help in a new role.
"Coach just came up to me one day and said, 'Hey we're going to try you as quarterback.' And I'm glad to do whatever it takes to make the team better."
Moore, who burned defenses throughout his junior season helping Montague advance to the third round of the playoffs, will be the focus of Pat Collins' offense in his final go-around.
"Brandon has proven himself as an athlete," says Collins. "Everybody knows Brandon Moore and he's continuing to work hard as a receiver but something he offers is athleticism so it's important that he touches the football and the quarterback position, he touches it pretty much every play so he's always going to have that opportunity to make plays."
Montague hopes to have another outstanding season with a big playoff run. The Wildcats have won at least a district championship in eight straight seasons. Last year ended with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Ithaca after a second-round win over rival Oakridge.
Collins says he returns about five starters on each side of the ball from that team.
"We're trying to carry on tradition and work hard every day. We want to play fast, work hard and finish what we started. We've been working all summer pretty hard. It's a great group of guys and they're committed to excellence."
