MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Michigan State Police investigation into Muskegon Heights Public Schools has ended, but now the U.S. Department of Education wants to review the case.
Last March, detectives from the state police and the Michigan attorney general's office seized computers and files from the Muskegon Heights board of education building. Detectives were looking at the district's use of federal Title I funds.
A spokesperson with state police Friday confirmed their investigation is over and no criminal charges will be filed.
But the U.S. Department of Education's office of inspector general wants to look at how the district spent federal money intended to help low-performing students.
Muskegon Heights acting superintendent says he learned of the development Thursday.
"I think that this is good news for the district, that the state police have ended their investigation," says Dave Sipka, who is also superintendent of the Muskegon Area Intermediate School district. "Again, I think it is expected that the Department of Education would review this as well."
Earlier this week, Muskegon Heights school employees were told the district's financial problems would delay some of their pay days begnning this month.
