GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - When you think of fighting cancer you should see purple, not red.
Thursday afternoon the Van Andel Institute announced a statewide initiative to help in the fight against cancer, because it affects everyone in every community they created a new fundraising effort called Purple Community.
Purple Community will expand the Van Andel Institute's fundraising efforts outside of West Michigan to include the entire state.
For the past two years many area schools held purple games to raise money for cancer research and donated their efforts to VAI. Those games raised nearly a half-million dollars.
Expanding fundraising efforts across the state through the newly formed Purple Community will allow for more fundraising dollars for cancer research, dollars that go directly to the Institute and the researchers. There's no middle man, no overhead costs to pay, just money going directory to finding the cure for cancer here in West Michigan.
