NEWAYGO, Mich. (WZZM) - The Newaygo County Sheriff's Office thought they were investigating a homicide and an active crime scene Tuesday night. Turns out they were caught up in an elaborate prank.
A person called 911 after visiting a home in the 9200 block of West 8th Street and finding a man, face down in the hallway with what was thought to be a gunshot wound in the back. The caller told police they saw the woman who owns the home with a firearm.
The caller fled the scene. Deputies from the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office, the Oceana County Sheriff's Office, Hesperia Police, and Fremont Police set up a perimeter around the home. Pro Med Ambulance responded as well, as did a news crew from WZZM 13.
After a short time, a man and a woman came out of the home and were taken into custody. After an investigation today, the incident was actually a hoax that the homeowners had created to play a trick on their friends.
No one currently is under arrest, but the case has been forwarded to the prosecutor's office for possible charges.
