January 2011 Weather Stats for Muskegon Michigan

Muskegon (WZZM) -

The month of January was an above-average and rather unusual month to start the year as it was warmer than average, wetter than average, and snowier than a typical January (believe it or not)!

Temperatures in January averaged 31.2°F, 5.8°F above average, making it the sixth warmest on record and 9.1°F warmer than last year (22.1°F).  Twenty-two days were warmer than average, seven were cooler and two were average.  The highest temperature occurred on January 11 with 56°F while the lowest temperature occurred on January 20 with 9°F.

Precipitation was above average last month with 3.13", 1.10" more than usual but 0.13" less than last year (3.26").  There were fourteen days with measurable precipitation, three less than average (17).

Snowfall in January amounted to 37.6", 9.6" more than usual but 15.3" less than last year (52.9").

There were seven clear days - five more than average (2), eleven partly cloudy days - eight more than usual (3), and thirteen cloudy days - thirteen fewer than average (26).

 

Temperature records:  Record high temperature of 50° on January 31 breaks the previous record of 48° set in 1988 and equaled in 1989; low temperature of 42° on January 31 sets a new record high minimum temperature (warmest low); previous record was 37° set in 1989; low temperature of 42° on January 6 sets a new record high minimum temperature (warmest low); previous record was 40° set in 2008.

Snowfall records:  14.9" of snow on January 14 breaks the previous record of 6.9" set in 1962.
